No Job too small!
This small front garden for a cottage in Lancashire just goes to prove that there is no project too big or too small to benefit from a redesign! The area was overgrown with self-seeded cottage planting and was proving impossible for the elderly owner to manage. She wanted to have somewhere to sit to enjoy the sunny south-facing garden and some structure to the planting that she could manage and enjoy and most of all some great cottage garden colourful favourites.
Making Space for a Garden
I cleared the majority of the planting but saved some specimens that would suit the redesign and opted to lay a rustic stepping stone path up the centre of the space for easy access.
New Cottage Planting
A new bench was installed on some further placed stepping stones and some new cottage planting introduced to accompany the already well established Buddleia davidii, Rosa ‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber’ and the stunning pink Phlox paniculata ‘Starfire’. Perennial planting and self-seeding varieties will ensure a fantastic summer show year on year. There is also some evergreen structure and spring bulbs incorporated to welcome the garden to life in February and March.
Further climbers have been introduced which will ascend the trellis surrounding the window and provide beautiful fragrance and colour throughout the seasons.
Quaintly Curved Border
The driveway also incorporated a quaintly curved border built of natural dry stone walling which was devoid of any planting and was brightened up with a selection of perennial cottage border favourites
